— Radhanath Swami's Journey

Radhanath Swami in Dev Prayag
“In Dev Prayag I came upon a man whose character is forever engraved in the slate of my memory,” says Radhanath Swami in The Journey Home.

On a chilly morning, as the stars were fading and the new day’s sun about to emerge, Radhanath Swami scrambled down a mountain to the place the rivers Bhagirathi and Alaknanda converge. From the point of this confluence the river is called the Ganges. The river’s song there was tumultuous.

Ignorant of the power of the current, Radhanath Swami submerged himself there for a bath.

Mathura
IT WAS ABOUT FIVE O’CLOCK IN THE MORNING and dawn was just emerging. Not knowing where to go or what to do, Radhanath Swami stood with his friend on a railway platform, which bustled with the crowds who came off the train and the hundreds who wrestled to get on. Amid it all, a strange comfort arose in Radhanath Swami’s heart. It was similar to that feeling he had while praying in the temple of Kasi Viswanath, a feeling that something special was about to happen in his life. There appeared to be a jovial mood in the crowd. Gary and Radhanath Swami looked at each other and, remembering the flower that had determined their route through Europe, decided to stay put for the time being. After some time the station became quiet.

Dalai Lama

Radhanath Swami was particularly struck by the love and honor the people held for their Dalai Lama. For the Tibetans, Dalai Lama had the spiritual power of a pope and the political authority of a king. His photograph was prominently displayed in every shop and home. One early morning while Radhanath Swami was meditating in the temple, a tall elderly lama with a shaved head, maroon robes, and a strand of wooden beads draped around his neck sat beside Radhanath Swami. He said that he had been observing Radhanath Swami for several days and asked if Radhanath Swami would like to ask any questions. They spent a couple of hours each day together. On one very special afternoon he invited Radhanath Swami to join him for a personal audience with the Dalai Lama.
